Brand association – Charlie’s angels

The promos of Charlies Angels are doing their rounds on Star World. So far I haven’t seen any brand associations.

Hope Axe  sponsors this program to create a synergy with what the brand stands for. They recent TV commercial “Axe Provoke” Has the tag line: “Even angels will fall” will suit perfectly with the content of the program.

Just a thought… Hope the advertisers and their agency realize the relevance and brand it soon before an opportunity is lost!

The Idle Indian…

I love reality shows.

For one, they don’t bore me to death like the routine serials.

Secondly, the initial part of all reality shows is what ticks me. The contestants and their raw mannerisms.
“I want my fame thing and I’ll get it even if it’s for a minute or two” kind of attitude.

But that’s about it.

I can’t stand the episodes that follow where each elimination that they have goes into a break so as to put you off completely.
Imagine you are about to know who’s gonna be eliminated and then bingo! comes another break. What the f&^% man!

Then comes the mother of all shows “The Indian Idol” As they claim it to be.

Well none it is according to me by any standards. Guys, look at what Sa Re Ga Ma Pa have delivered in terms of stars. Shreya Ghosal… sirf naam hi kaafi hai!

Look at Indian Idol… Abhijeet Sawant… the poor guy looks the same no matter what makeover he goes through. Boy, he does everything except singing!

Now look at the lows of this show:

  • Anu Malik. The eternal copycat of Bollywood does not seem to fade away from sight, does he? I mean there is the II-5 this guys still hangs around
  • How come you call it Indian Idol whereas you completely ignore states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Now please don’t tell me that you are covering Hyderabad so let the guys from these two states come and participate. All it takes is just two more stops Chennai and Cochin. Don’t we have national stars like AR Rahman and KJ Yesudas who hail from the south (Plus the long list of all other stars down south) So, to me this is not an Indian Idol to begin with!
  • The judges keep on fighting on who’s best and whose worst. Where they mean is the overall look and attitude. Boss, aren’t we searching a music talent? Anyone with such attitude can opt for a Miss India or maybe the Gladrags Manhunt for God’s sake!
  • Anu Malik disagrees with every judge for no rhyme or reason (God I hate him no wonder)

Then the mother of all stupidity pops in… Last night we were watching the show and that’s when it blew my top! Imagine the contestants have reached a level where they are into the top 6 or 8 ranks.

Technically speaking, well if that’s true that is… These contestants are supposed to be the cream of what they have sifted through.
These contestants are supposed to be good singers period! I mean they may do their little bit mistakes here and there which is so normal even amongst established singers… But what irritates me is that the Judges still giving basic singing tips on how to sing that song which you normally give to participants at the initial stages.

“Dear Judges, don’t you think you could have given these tips/ chances to people you just shooed off saying they are bad singers?” during the earlier rounds.
Atleast that way the top six would have been the best of the lot.

Look at what participants we have in the final top six.
The two girls… They look good… So what? Boy can they sing? No way!

I have seen the judges giving too much gyaan to these two singers who with each and every performance prove that this one is worse than the other!

So many good talents have been whipped off in the bargain.
I can only think of Geetesh. There were still many good singers besides him… but this guy just stuck around in my memory!

The guy walked in. Started off with a carnatic rendition and jumped to a Sufi number and finally ending with a pop song. Gosh what a transition!
I would have straight away taken him to the top 8 to say the least.

The judges could have worked on singers like him. Really separate the chaff from the wheat and given us the Idol who truly represents the concept for what it is.

But then you know… I don’t trust the judges themselves. Yes, they have given few hits here and there. That’s about it? And they don’t feature in any of my favorite’s list.

I guess I’ll just move myself to watching other shows and Idle around rather than worry about this Idol!

Coz this show is really searching for that great IDLE INDIAN!

Its all scripted…

I want you to do one exercise… No sorry, I mean a check actually.

Watch any reality show, game show… keep watching it for like 2 to 3 episodes. While doing it, you begin to wonder where this is all coming from!

Be it the dance shows, singing shows or any other form of entertaining shows… There is a reason you wonder why stars of those show act in a certain fashion.

I have been watching the telly or I must emphasize the Idiot box quite often and I am kind of bored to death watching so much stupidity that happens in the name of entertainment.

Some very common sights you are bound to notice:

  • In a dance show, a person trips, flips, falls and then there is a studied silence
  • Crying is so common
  • Judges fighting against each other over their choice of singers etc
  • Judges walking out of a show
  • The show’s stars fighting over an issue for nothing
  • Sometimes the microphone goes off and is not working. The poor contestant looses all his/ her confidence
  • Judges brings down the contestant and treats them so low as if they commited a crime by forgetting a line or not posing properly while performing
  • One of the show’s contestants is a funny character… judges decide to give him/ her a ticket until the next round…

Gone are the days when you posed as a good guy in front of the camera to gain attention. Today anyone who makes news is a hot property. Sometimes the channel and the contestants go to any lengths to appear plain stupid, nonsense on national television. I guess it works brilliantly not just for the star of the show but the channel as well. And we as viewers are absolutely fine with it.

Also recently there was this actress who was found in a compromising situation with a spiritual guru. It became a national debate and I am sure this will keep enough offers pouring in for her! Wow! So much for belittling yourself.

With equal ease we would rubbish them off but keep pursuing more such news.

Why do you think ”No-ones” like Rakhi Sawant, Rahul Mahajan, Monica Bedi, Sambhavana Seth and their clan are such celebrities today? Thanks really. Being nothing, nonsense and no-one sometimes work wonders. And works best these times.

You know even with no opportunities today Rakhi Sawant, Rahul Mahajan… et all are as famous celebrities as Sharukh Khan, Aamir Khan or Amithab Bachchan.

You just have to be in the news. Play stupid. Talk Rubbish. Keep your nuts at home and get stardom.

There are scriptwriters today on television who create (I mean script it!) a scene even in reality shows which would raise the program’s TRP levels soaring…

Nothing is as real as it seems…

And our dear viewers feel bad for what’s happening on the screen, praying to God to have mercy on these actors…

But don’t worry, It’s all scripted that way…

My name is Rahul Mahajan. Will you marry me?

Is the message you are getting whenever you tune in to NDTV Imagine.

I know… I know… you are keen to know more about me and you have almost started falling in love with me… It’s my charm that has got me going…

I am there every other second asking for a hand so that I can finally settle down leaving what all I had done before. Well, actually to be very frank with you, I have really been there and done all that (All, all that!)

You know anyone who makes news today is a celebrity. Gone are those days when only the top actors/ cricketeers/ politicians/ socialites were termed as celebrities. The trend these days is for anyone who is on TV or let me say “In the news” for good or for worse is a celebrity!

So what if I belong to the latter lot!

Look at my peers for what they have done for themselves, Rakhi is the best example and probably I should say, my mentor of sorts! So much so that I am following her footsteps…

I had a famous father! (Shri Pramod Mahajan… Well, he was shot dead by my uncle… God bless his soul!)

I went in as a recluse. Drugs, dope whatever you call it… I had it all and it was one of those how do I say… yeah,  floating moments of my life. I don’t know what’s the big deal about it! The media were all over the place writing about me. Good job you journos for keeping me in the news!

I was even briefly sent to jail for possession of drugs (Obviously!!!!… they became more like medicine to me… I had to keep a stock na! You may never know when you need it… and by the way tell me which celebrity doesn’t stock them at home!)

Then came the best phase of my life. Me and my long time mate and best friend Shweta got married. We met in US where we were training for pilot license and soon we were best friends for more that 13 years! We used to fly the Indian airlines/ Jet airways planes. It was great fun!

As they say… love was in the air!

Marriage life was great going and I enjoyed it thoroughly too!

But I don’t know why Shweta had to divorce me?

Is wife beating so bad and brutal?

And why not I am a celebrity no?

Anyways, it was her choice…I did my best to be the strong husband that I could… I am still wondering why she left me…

God has been unkind…

God, I am so alone…

Then came the boss… The Bigg Boss of all shows…

I made best friends with all my inmates. I was such a good inmate… You can really ask my ex-inmates?

I got to meet two of the most amazing women. Payal Rohatgi and Monica Bedi. The most decent women I could ever find. You will rarely find such pieces of items these days! I tried my best to be the man I could with these awesome women… alas it didn’t last that long!

Sad no?

And you know what they too are celebrities (Good news, bad news…its all part and parcel of our celebrity stars!)

But I must tell you on and off Bigg Boss, I had a great time with them.

Alas, that had to end too!

Why do good things come to an end so soon?

Hey but wait…

I am still single and always ready to mingle!

What’s your rashee?

Are you single too?

Are you married? Yes, even then I can manage.

No problem!

You will not find a newsmaker like me (Yeah, besides Rakhi sawant!)

Try me and just give it a shot. I can promise you that you will be all over the media… like a fresh paint on a rainy day!

Think of it if you do not like me once you know me IN and OUT, you can always walk off like Shweta! Yeah, it is that easy… And by that time you would have become famous for being my wife and guess then what? You too can approach NDTV imagine to find another groom for you just like they did to me. NDTV is now the official sanstha (Instituiton) for cheap celebrities like me who will otherwise not find brides the usual way!

Now tell me… are you ready to marry me?

Are you really sure you wanna marry me?

Well then, all the best to you!

Disclaimer: The above facts are true by every word. If you don’t believe it, try googling “Rahul Mahajan” and you will find thousands of articles written about him with full passion and conviction by all leading journos!

Truth hurts!

These days I am quite addicted to TV. Not in the real sense though. Quite some things are happening on TV and I guess for good! It’s a slow start but let’s see how it goes.

For one, we are kind of getting away from the gharelu stories and secondly there’s so much new content to be seen. I guess this is just the beginning. Beginning of some good quality based programming. Ok. If not quality lets say something different is being offered. Good for the viewer!

It’s high time that channels subscribe to what is needed by the viewer and show them rather than dictate what they want to show.

The soap operas are changing by the day. Some good and new contenders are Ladies special on Sony TV, Meera on NDTV Imagine, Is Jungle se Mujhe Bachao on Sony TV (What the tasks, real scary!), Rakhi ka swayamvar on NDTV Imagine (Though I don’t approve of the format, it makes for quite a viewing and some guts this lady has… to be in the news to say the least. People like me hate it but still watch it.) Up goes the TRPs!

Amongst the recent entries “Sach ka Saamna on Star Plus” stands out…

I used watch on/ off Moment of truth on Star world and many a times used to switch it off for its extremely gory projection of truth. I mean you can imagine the Americans can come up with any game show that is unimaginable! I was so put off with the progress of the program that I just changed the channel or just put it off!

Moment of truth
The Moment of Truth was an American game show based on the Colombian Nada más que la verdad format (“Nothing More than the Truth”). Contestants answer a series of 21 increasingly personal and embarrassing questions to receive cash prizes. The show was hosted by Hollywood actor Mark L. Walberg and aired by the Fox network. The show premiered on January 23, 2008. Howard Schultz is the creator of this show

moment-truth01

Program Format
Prior to the show, a contestant is hooked up to a polygraph and asked more than 50 questions; there is no polygraph testing conducted during the actual show. Without knowing the results of the polygraph, he or she is asked 21 of those same questions again on the program, each becoming progressively more personal in nature. If the contestant answers honestly, according to the polygraph results, he or she moves on to the next question; however, should a contestant lie in his or her answer (as determined by the polygraph) or simply refuse to answer a question after it has been asked, the game ends.

Some questions are way too scary even to the viewer. And while watching it, I was quite happy and prided in being an Indian for such a format was not made in India. I thought we Indians are way too conservative and shelled to come out in the open and face our moment of truth!

But alas, that’s not the reality! We are suddenly open to various situations and I guess many of us still are extremely strong enough to face the most horrendous truth and that too in front of a nation-wide or should I say world-wide audience!

The questions posed during the course of the program are too much to digest and especially answering them in front of your mother, sister, wife, girl friend/ fiancée… I wonder to what levels the show organizers will go to explore the deepest and darkest questions…

  • Did you feel attracted with your wife’s sister?
  • Do you feel orphaned in spite of having your parents?
  • Do you think you are smart and good looking compared to your siblings?
  • Did you ever cheat your clients and made money out of that?
  • Are you still attracted towards your wife?
  • Do you like to see yourself naked in front of the mirror?
  • Did you ever feel your wife cheated on you? Did you ever cheat on your wife?
  • Are you still having an affair with him? Did you get pregnant with him? (asked to a wife)

And it goes on and on and on… With every level you scale up, the questions just go personal…

Imagine you are giving out answers in front of your family…

So, is the 1 crore question really worth it?

You build relations over many years with your family and friends. You build trust over the years and would you just let go of them by answering things that could give you enough money, but let go of all your relations?

I sometimes wonder, when the participants are introduced to the viewers, you see happy faces.
Proud parents, friends, siblings, kids who are happy to be on television for their few minutes of glory!

But when their moment is over, what would be happening behind the screens?

  • Will the family behave again as normally they used to do?
  • Will this be an end to their relationships?
  • Will they have the same trust they had before?
  • Will they be able to talk to each other eye-to-eye?

Strange no?

I was atleast thankful for myself for not being in their shoes.

I’d never be. Not for money and not in front of this world. Nothing is worth it. Really!

I don’t think its worth even with the richest of the riches to make it to this kind of a show although I admit it makes for quite a viewing…

To me this is like watching a psychological thriller and you just expect that you are not prey in the hands of this serial killer! Of course in this case it’s the show’s host…

At the end of if when all’s said and done, I guess you will be standing all alone with your bag full of money (If at all you make it, that is!) and the relations… well… once there is a question mark in your relationship its not worth anything in this world!

I would rather face the truth with the person in question, clarify and have a clear conscience for being truthful to thy self than show it to the world!

It’s so weird really. No one goes to the show to be truthful to begin with.
Moral cleansing on this kind of show is all bull shit.
Would the same contestant come to the show if there was no prize money?

It is only to do with the bag of money that they are ready to give you to face the truth.
This program is being in the news, in media especially for the kind of crude truth it presents. I am sure various sections of the society would love to pull off this one… Especially politicians

What I would really love to is to see politicians put to such tasks and see what they come up with? Celebrities being celebrities have got their name, fame and fortune through a certain process and that maybe through their talent or maybe through the couch! And they have already paid their price to get to this level. So it wouldn’t really matter.

But that’s not the case with politicians…they do everything and get away with everything… I wish as a viewer I could see them ripped apart with such questions.

With this some more questions come to my mind…

  • Can the 1 crore question be any worse than this? I mean if these questions itself are so bad, what about the final 2 questions?
  • Another reason for increasing no of divorces in the country? Atleast all the contestants!
  • Is there any more such formats or rip-offs expected in the near future? Is this the new trend in entertaining people?

You know what just forget it…

Let me check what’s up the latest Hollywood release on psychologicall thrillers!

Atleast it’s fictional…
