Don’t worry… God has enough money!

I am at a truly inspired level since the past few days.

It’s got nothing to do with a promotion or acruing more money or anything remotely like that.

I just got an email from one friend about this gentleman from Madurai… Mr. Narayanan Krishnan… I read it at length (In spite of the chaos happening in my office at the moment) and that email made me look at life, my life and what I want to do with it.

I don’t know how many times I would have told this to myself that I will some day dedicate some of my time to the helpless and the poor… well mostly it was in my mind and rest of the times it was on paper… I mean by blogging and stuff. Imagine I actually started talking about it even without taking any step towards it and how good is that?

I hear that this guy was about to embark on a high level in his career and then bingo! Something happened within him… He held himself back and did what he was meant to do. Serve the needy and the poorest of them all.
Mr. Krishnan prepares food for these underprivileged and feeds almost 400 stomachs a day. Isn’t that amazing? I mean imagine you take up a cause and work towards it everyday… What a satisfaction it would give you.

You are hungry and just want to eat anything. Suddenly you mom or wife comes over and serves you the dish she has prepared with all her love and care.
You know exactly how they feel when you have eaten well! Now just imagine what it would feel to this gentleman taking this as a job everyday for no monetary benefit or whatever!

Now this is the kind of service that has inspired the Human inside me. I read it over and over yesterday and I am still not able to come to my terms.

We are so busy with our work and life. No time to stand. No time to even stare. And obviously no time for any of these.

All we do at the end of the year is put some money in a temple hoping our sinful souls will be cleansed. Well it does many times but is that all we should do at the end of the day?

I now come to resent the fact that all these things are just passe. A quick way to wiggle out of a situation.

I think I would rather worry about the hand that stretches out to me at the signal asking for a meager penny or a cry at the end of the street where an urchin lay barely naked awaiting her next morsel of food.

As for the temples, I’d leave them to the rich paupers… Coz’ God has enough money!

An incredible story of personal commitment

If you had not heard of Narayanan Krishnan, as I had not, it is a collective failure.

This is one of the most incredible stories of personal commitment.
Narayanan Krishnan, all of 29 years old now, does what he was professionally trained to do as a chef. Feed people. Only Krishnan does not do this in the swanky confines of a 5-star hotel.

Every day, he wakes up at 4 am, cooks a simple hot meal and then, along with his team, loads it in a van and travels about 200 km feeding the homeless in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Krishnan feeds, often with his hands, almost 400 destitute people every day. And for those who need it, he provides a free haircut too.

According to CNN, eight years ago, this award-winning chef with a five-star hotel chain was all set to go to Switzerland for a high-profile posting. On a visit to a Madurai temple, he came across a homeless, old man eating his own human waste. That stark sight changed Krishnan’s life.

Much to the dismay of his parents, CNN says, Krishnan abandoned his career plans and decided to spend his life and his professional training in looking after those who could not care for themselves. He has provided more than 1.2 million hot meals through his non-profit organization Akshaya Trust, and now hopes to extend this to shelter for the homeless too.

Krishnan is the only Indian in a list of 10 heroes that CNN has picked worldwide to honor. One of them will be chosen CNN Hero of the Year, selected by the public through an online poll. If many Indians get together to vote for this inspiring man, he can win by a long mile.

If Krishnan wins he will get $100,000 in addition to the $25,000 that he gets for being shortlisted for the Top 10.

Akshaya Trust needs all the monetary support it can get to build on Krishnan’s dream.
Let’s help him get there. http://edition.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/04/01/cnnheroes.krishnan.hunger/
Vote for Krishnan. The poll continues through November 18 at 6 a.m. ET on CNN

Please pass on this message to as many people/ friends and colleagues you can. Share it on you social networking sites and kindly vote for this super human being.

We rarely get opportunities to go beyond our hands and reach out to people. This is our only way to encourage people who are doing great work around us.

That sales girl in Giri trading store…

This is an email forward and easily one of the best and the most inspiring piece I have ever come across.
I don’t know who has written this piece but once I get to know about it, I will surely add the credits here. As one said… “A good talent will never go unnoticed.”

Please read along and be inspired.
I wish in my lifetime I could find such gems of talent and in my own way show them light and provide guidance…

After a simple Temple Darshan we entered “Giri Trading” and started searching for this Book on Thatva Bodha..

We found many people buying various Books and CDs and from their smart walks and accumulation of CDs from Bhajans to Bombay Jaishree, sent a nice feeling in us,that,we have come to the right place indeed…

I was looking for this Book while my wife started collecting Bharathiar’s songs and Ms’s Music..
I searched everywhere for this Book..

There was this Girl Kalaivani, standing next to the Cashier, sincerely watching all our movements.. a dark complexioned Girl, should be from a nearby Village, might be 17 or 18, should not have crossed 8th Std.,Might be out of POverty she is here..all my Journalist’s brain unnecessarily calculated about this Gullible Girl..and tho’ she was repeatedly watching me,I ignored her and started searching for “Thathva Bodha”

I saw many books from”Sandhya Vandanam” to Swami VIvekananda’s Chicago Speech” but having spent a good 40 minutes..I looked at her.. she also looked at me curiously..

I asked her, knowing fully well that such a girl cannot have any idea of anything, leave alone Thathva Bodah..

“Sir,Shall I help you?” (in Tamil)

“Yes I am looking for Thatva Bodha?”

“Sanskrit Text or English /Sanskrit?”

God..she knows..

“Sanskrit& English”

“Do you like to have the Publication from Chinmaya Mission or Indu Publications or by Ramakrishna Mutt?”

“I dont know..I just want to only Learn you see..I dont really know indeed”

“Do you read Tamil Sir?”

“Yes I am a Tamilian ”

(thinking to myself how most of mylife time I like to act in most other places that I am not)

“Then Sir,you can take this”..she ran to the Shelf where I had searched for 30 minutes, removed the books in the front side and came out with a Book in Tamil

“This one in Tamil by N.Sivaraman by Indu Publications infact is simple and wonderfullYou have the Sanskrit Text too inside..”

My God..Why did I under estimate such a Genius..Just because of my arrogance that I am an NRI..

Or Just because I presumed such a Black, dark complexioned, gullible girl, who would have come for this job out of absolute poverty, wouldn’t have any idea of “Thatva Bodha”

I decided to change my attitude and realized that I am absolutely an ‘Idiot’ at this moment in front of this wonderful girl and submitted myself in all humility..

“Madam, I really don’t have any idea of even who wrote Thatva Bodha till Yesterday..I just attended a lecture on this subject and was fascinated by the lecture and hence”

“Did you attend Goda Venkateswara Sastri’s lecture in Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan?”

“Oh God..How did you know?”

“He regularly takes classes on such subjects..in fact he is one of the best Sir, in the city on such subjects”

“You are interested in such subjects?”

“Yes Sir, I read a lot about Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna and Thathva Bodha incidentally is my favorite Subject”

“You mean to say you have read Thatva Bodha.?”

“I have read this one by Sivaraman and once you read it you won’t feel like keeping that book on the table at all..”

“Why what is so great about this Book?”

“Sir,you must be Joking that you don’t know about Thatva Bodha..”

“Really I accept my ignorance..”

My wife was watching from the corner, admiring all her Cd collections..

“Sir,according to me if you read this it gives the entire Vedanthic Saramsam and one word become a bit more humble in life.. leaving Ahamkaram once for all..”

“Is it a fact that reading this simple book one wd get so humble..

“Of course one should be involved totally into the text..

Needs lot of conviction and devotion..”

My wife joined the conversation and she felt this girl is indeed a very very talented intelligent girl..so she told me “Why don’t you interview her for Washington Post..why at all you
should think of Paris Hilton?”

I also felt that I owe something to her..so I asked her whether she can spare sometime for an interview..

She politely refused saying

“My boss is to give me permission..

Besides many people are looking for guidance like you and hence I have to go..”

“What is your name anyway?”

“Kalaivani”..

My wife’s admiration for her devotion to duty and her total involvement in her work..made her go direct to the Boss..”Sir,that girl Kalaivani..”

“Yes very hard working Girl..”

“This is my husband Viswanath ..”

“Nice meeting you Sir”

“He is the Senior Journalist in Washington Post..”

Boss stood up..”Washington Post?”

“Yes Sir..I wd like to interview this girl..I am highly impressed..with her ethics..”

Boss called her..Time was 5:45 Pm…

“Kalaivani, they have come all the way from USA..they would like to spend sometime with you..can you?”

“Sir,there are so many customers waiting for some guidance..

it is a rush time..if they can come again tomorrow..”

“OK OK I can come again tomorrow..”

I again came next day morning leaving all my appointments with Times of India just to see this girl..It was no rush hour..

My wife and myself found out….

Kalaivani is from a nearby village near Arcot.. She has 5 sisters..She is the eldest one..Her father was a drunkard and he died a few years ago caring for none of them..Her mother used to work as a helper in Masonry and passed away two years back..leaving all the 6 on the streets..

This girl who had completed her 9th std decided to search for a job and Giri Trading came forward to help her out..She brought all her 5 sisters with her and with her meagre salary she is taking care of them..all the 5 sisters are going to a nearby corporation school..

“Kalaivani..but when did you get this enthusiasm to learn about Thatva Bodha?”

“Sir after joining here,I decided that the best way to be of help to the customers is to know the subject first..I took small Books on Swami Vivekananda and started reading..I found the subject so
fascinating..I decided to read other books in Tamil like Bagavad Gita and Viveka Choodamani..Thats how..”

“What is your salary?”

“Rs 2500..Sir”

“Are you able to manage all your expenses with the 5 sisters..?”

“Not at all Sir but the Boss helps me a lot..?”

“What is your aim in Life?”

“I want all my sisters to get education.. then they would get easily employments is it not?”

“If I give monthly Rs 10000 for meeting all your expenses..wd that suffice..?”

“It is indeed too much but that also I would accept only thro’ my Boss..”

We took her to the Boss and told him that we would like to send Rs.10000 every month so that all her sisters’ education would be completed..Boss said

“She deserves it Sir..You can trust me I will hand over the amount to her every month or alternately you can open an acct in her name and start transferring..”

My friend John Paul, who is the Regional Manager of Times of India had also come with me..

He said “You have done a good thing..”

My wife said “I pray that Karpagambal helps Kalaivani to become an expert in Vedantha and start giving lectures in USA.. We can arrange for her lectures..”

We left wonder struck….If we go into the interiors of Bihar and Barrackpur… how many more Jewels can be found. I really became humbled

May God bless Kalaivani and Mr. Viswanath

Freedom, Independence… Anyone?

So what’s the plan this year?

It’s independence day.
It’s a day off.
A time to celebrate, just like any other day…
I know I hate it too when we get a national day off during weekends…
What to do? We have too many such days and events in our yearly calender and the list now is just too endearing.

So what have you decided this year?

Like last year watch lots of theme based shows on all national TV, Surf a lot on your remote, take off with your family to a restaurant for a nice and sumptuous lunch followed by some shopping

God, aren’t we tired of doing the same old thing over and again?

I mean we have one and what are we doing with it?

Independence has become such a clichéd word now!
We use it over and again and abuse it to the max…

What have we done within us and around having got any independence?
Can you name one thing that you feel you have done worthwhile using the independence that you have got today?

Go to a school… you’ll find teachers teaching the same old history, geography etc etc. Our kids are expected to know the date when Gandhiji started the Dandi march and broke the salt act or whatever it was for whatever the cause. I mean it’s all good. Really good to know but who gives a damn if the date is mentioned wrongly by the student? 1 mark gone. Someone wrote it correctly. Someone wrote it wrong. Our Indian curriculum expects you to score full marks even with that God forsaken correct date. But no one cares to tell or ask students to think what if that particular incident didn’t happen? Or maybe a scenario where you alter the possibilities and allow kids to come up with their own analysis on a given situation. Don’t you think that would make the kid go through pages in history, understand the facts and then arrive at their own inferences? No wonder, most of us are so bad when it comes to knowing what happened during those times… our past.. our history…. No wonder we are still harvesting book worms rather than brains that is most desparately needed in these competitive times.

Come home, a parent expects kids to be someone. Some person.
Doctor, Engineers are the most common of all. Kids are not supposed to be what they want to be. They are supposed to be what their parents want them to be.
Do we watch what our kid is doing intently? Maybe a drawing, reading, narrating, reciting or anything that lets a spark and makes you think “Hey I guess my kid could become a good musician?”
But no! We immediately assign a price tag to their dreams.
“Nah, it’s too cheap”
“No scope in that”
“Not another AR Rahman”
“You will only end up running here and there”

How many times have we dismissed our kids right to their dreams?
How rare have we followed it?
To make it even worse, we rave about our neighbour’s kid having too ambitious dreams and on the contrary shoo our own kid’s thoughts!

Have we ever aimed our kids to be the most prolific writer in the world, or maybe a scientist or even a cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar?

Why are we so stuck to some basic achievable dreams that suit our pockets more than the eyes and hearts of our kids?

Why shouldn’t we aim higher?
Why should we shy away from those dreams?
Do we think those dreams are smaller?

I am yet to see a kid of today who knows what he wants to become when he grows up. Whatever he/ she says its all a sound box relayed from their parents rather than their own.

So what true independence have we all achieved if we haven’t given that basic requirement to our children when it comes to their future?

What’s the point in celebrating it when we don’t know to use it fully?
Only that day will be the day we finally get our independence. Until then it is all the same except that we are the oppressors and our kids the slaves.

Can we see a day when we can live the dreams that our kids want?

I would surely say yes, that day isn’t far behind. Times are changing so are our thoughts and outlook towards life.

Let’s give what we didn’t get. Let’s make our children what we couldn’t achieve.

Happy Independence day!

Happy friendship day!

I wonder what would have happened in life without you…
What good have I done to have found you.

I sometimes wonder, if life would have been the same if you were not there.

You are the one who taught me to be selfless, free, expressive and all those things I wanted to be…

You are my friend, my guiding spirit

No wonder I search you in all my existing relationships

You are a sibling God forgot to give!

Happy friendship day!
