Anywhere I roam… It’s still Rome!

I am writing this post not out of curiosity or frustration but actually a bit of both and maybe more!

Tell me how many times have you been to a Govt. office and came out either smiling or maybe early!!!

NEVER! would always be the right answer.

You take any sector within the Govt offices and they all are the same no matter what.

  • You have the front offices but there’s no one to attend to you
  • There are some dorks sitting in the front offices but too busy chatting over the phone
  • Old and worn out interiors are a very common sight (Not to mention cobwebs accessorizing them!)
  • Old papers and files all over the place
  • Constant nagging and curses
  • That typical rancid smell
  • Don’t even think about going to their bathrooms
  • Twenty people are assigned on a single job
  • Only the manager has a cubicle
  • Rest all are open system offices
  • The manager has a computer in his office (Wow!)
  • Every customer is treated like a slave
  • Every customer is expected to treat these officers as Gods
  • Every time is a lunch time
  • You know what time you came in… Don’t even look at your watch!
  • You may have lots of questions… Don’t show your smartness here!
  • Play dumb… Dumber is even better…
  • The last time you went v/s this time… rules are no longer the same… and it’s been only a month!
  • The suggestion box is all old and tattered… Holds some very important stuff like used cigarette buds,  trashed papers and the most important guests… spiders!
  • The staff is always under qualified for their work!

Isn’t it amazing?

Why is that all government offices are always like these? Couldn’t there be a system in place? A record which is available to all so that all your basic queries can be answered suitably. This can be updated as an when required over a certain period.

Why do they complicate a process so much? So many signatures required. From the guys at the counter to the manager… You literally need to run/ jog everytime to get some approvals or the other.

Even worse, why don’t they have all of them at the same premise. When you realize that you are done with all the formalities, you are asked to do some further tests but that department is miles away from here… Another day wasted!

And then you know what? You feel it’s only in your hometown that you experience such things but then when you move out you realize that no matter wherever you go… it’s the same.

And trust me they all belong to the same school of thought.

Their motto is: Take your good time baby… Nothing is urgent… why rush…

Like the saying goes… Rome was not built in a day!

Its all scripted…

I want you to do one exercise… No sorry, I mean a check actually.

Watch any reality show, game show… keep watching it for like 2 to 3 episodes. While doing it, you begin to wonder where this is all coming from!

Be it the dance shows, singing shows or any other form of entertaining shows… There is a reason you wonder why stars of those show act in a certain fashion.

I have been watching the telly or I must emphasize the Idiot box quite often and I am kind of bored to death watching so much stupidity that happens in the name of entertainment.

Some very common sights you are bound to notice:

  • In a dance show, a person trips, flips, falls and then there is a studied silence
  • Crying is so common
  • Judges fighting against each other over their choice of singers etc
  • Judges walking out of a show
  • The show’s stars fighting over an issue for nothing
  • Sometimes the microphone goes off and is not working. The poor contestant looses all his/ her confidence
  • Judges brings down the contestant and treats them so low as if they commited a crime by forgetting a line or not posing properly while performing
  • One of the show’s contestants is a funny character… judges decide to give him/ her a ticket until the next round…

Gone are the days when you posed as a good guy in front of the camera to gain attention. Today anyone who makes news is a hot property. Sometimes the channel and the contestants go to any lengths to appear plain stupid, nonsense on national television. I guess it works brilliantly not just for the star of the show but the channel as well. And we as viewers are absolutely fine with it.

Also recently there was this actress who was found in a compromising situation with a spiritual guru. It became a national debate and I am sure this will keep enough offers pouring in for her! Wow! So much for belittling yourself.

With equal ease we would rubbish them off but keep pursuing more such news.

Why do you think ”No-ones” like Rakhi Sawant, Rahul Mahajan, Monica Bedi, Sambhavana Seth and their clan are such celebrities today? Thanks really. Being nothing, nonsense and no-one sometimes work wonders. And works best these times.

You know even with no opportunities today Rakhi Sawant, Rahul Mahajan… et all are as famous celebrities as Sharukh Khan, Aamir Khan or Amithab Bachchan.

You just have to be in the news. Play stupid. Talk Rubbish. Keep your nuts at home and get stardom.

There are scriptwriters today on television who create (I mean script it!) a scene even in reality shows which would raise the program’s TRP levels soaring…

Nothing is as real as it seems…

And our dear viewers feel bad for what’s happening on the screen, praying to God to have mercy on these actors…

But don’t worry, It’s all scripted that way…

Sardars… no jokes really!

I received this inspiring piece on email from my friend Sunita Jadhav. Worth a read!

We all love Sardar jokes. But do you know that Sikhs are one of the hardest working prosperous and diversified communities in the world.

My friend told me about the following incident which I wish to share with you.

It has had a deep impact on my thinking.

During last vacation, his few friends came to Delhi . They rented a taxi for local sight-seeing. The driver was an old Sardar and boys being boys, these pals began cracking Sardarji jokes, just to tease the old man. But to their surprise, the fellow remained unperturbed.

At the end of the sight-seeing, they paid the cab hire-charges. The Sardar returned the change, but he gave each one of them one rupee extra and said, ”Son, since morning you have been telling Sardarji jokes.. I listened to them all and let me tell you, some of them were in bad taste. Still, I don’t mind coz I know that you are young blood and are yet to see the world..

But I have one request. I am giving you one rupee each. Give it to the first Sardar beggar that you come across in this or any other city.’

My friend continued,* ‘ That one rupee coin is still with me. I couldn’t find a single Sardar begging anywhere.’

MORAL:

The secret behind their universal success, is their willingness to do any job with utmost dedication and pride. A Sardar will drive a truck or set up a roadside garage or a dhaba, put a fruit juice stall, take up small time carpentry, … but he will never beg on the streets

We live in a nation…

I received this on email and it really makes you wonder that…

We live in a nation :

  • Where Pizza reaches home faster than Ambulance or police,
  • Where you get car loan @ 8% and education loan @ 12%,
  • Where rice is Rs 40/- per kg but sim card is free,
  • Where a millionaire can buy a cricket team instead of donating the money to any charity,
  • Where the footwear, we wear, are sold in AC showrooms, but vegetables, that we eat, are sold on the footpath,
  • Where everybody wants to be famous but nobody wants to follow the path to be famous,
  • Where we make lemon juices with artificial flavors and dish wash liquids with real lemon.
  • Where people are standing at tea stalls reading an article about child labor from a newspaper and say,
“Yaar bachhon se kaam karvane wale ko to phansi par chadha dena chahiye”
and then they shout “Oye chhotu 2 chaii laao…..”

Very Sad, but this is true!!

Gaur Karo, Garv nahi…

Thanks Sabitha for sharing this with me.

A movie for all the right reasons!

When was the last time you remember having waiting for a movie.

An experience that would change the way you’ve seen anything unlike before.

I remember the longing we all had for Jaws, Star wars in the 70′s, E.T, Indiana Jones in the 80′s, Titanic, Jurassic Park in the 90′s, Matrix, Lord of the Rings trilogy in the millenium and the more recent Avatar.

If we look at these films during those path breaking decades, each of these films had a vision. A vision that would transcend all barriers that could otherwise slowdown the pace, the technicalities of making films in a traditional sense!

Star wars was and is still considered to be one of the most prolific and visionary movie of it’s Genre.

Same goes for Matrix where a single action scene was shot across various angles which would become a trend for most of the films to follow. Such a technique was unimaginable before Matrix. And now it’s become a norm for most action and thrillers.

Coming to Lord of the Rings, the book written by JRR Tolkien. Such a piece of fiction cannot be literally brought to life on screen. To bring words and put them as pictures was not an easy task. Peter Jackson broke the usual norms of conventional film making. Peter Jackson sourced out each and every artist who had contributed some images for the original work. It was not an easy task. Each of these artists had dispersed and moved on with life. I guess the movie saw the light of the day once all these immensely talented artists were brought together to create an unimaginable magic onscreen. Each frame of the movie was captured at a particular location with this creative group of people who sat together and brainstormed as to how the sceen would look and then sets were created accordingly.
And as we all know LOTR went on to win major oscars for all the three films.

The much recent Avatar has not only broken all time box office records. A special camera was actually invented during the filming of this movie. This camera is tied around the actor and it captures each and every nuance of the actor in terms of their facial expression which gives amazing and realistic looking scenes in the film. The film is an experience by itself. Now most of the films to follow (Atleast the major ones) will be shot in 3D which has caught up big time with viewers alike. Similarly most prominent films might be re introduced on a 3D version. Even the TV technology today is gearing up towards this concept…

So what else should we expect as viewers? Is there anything new that we can expect? Or we have seen enough and we all guess that this is the end of creativity in terms watching a film?

I guess as long as we as humans have the capacity to think and go beyond selfless norms, to have a vision, mission and the will to follow dreams… there is always a possibility of exceeding everyone’s expectations!

Having said that the only worthy concept that comes to my mind is the great epic “Mahabharata”

I guess no matter what we see in terms of a myth, mystery or adventure… each of them would in a way be similar to what we have seen the past in terms of their look and feel…

Mahabharata goes beyond all that.
Mahabharata has a major story line and various sub-plots within the main story. A trilogy would just work perfect.
Now, imagine this movie on a big screen. The finest actors we have in Indian cinema today. You name the actors and they all are there. (The list would be too much to mention, but yes, the best ones we all know who they are)

It should be a trilogy. Shot one after the other. A collaboration of minds and not egos! A creative vision and not just a financial one.

The best directors (Mani Ratnam, Vishal Bharadwaj, Bala, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowarikar and various other regional visionary directors) The best music directors (AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsan-Loy, Amit Trivedi, Illaiyaraja just to name a few) The best lyricists (Gulzaar saab, Javed Akhtar, Prasoon Joshi etc)

Each and every department should work towards getting the best and the most talented and above all the most deserving candidate.

Corporates should join in to finance this project showing their solidarity, integrity towards such a project.

This will be multilingual film as it has to be shot in various languages to make it to national viewing.

This will be the face of modern India. The one that the west is yet to experience.

Are we really ready to do this?

I guess the answer is a Yes and big No?

Yes, because we are still a very talented lot. We still make movies that attract a lot of international attention. Our premise is different. Music, Colors, Drama et all

A big no. Yes a very Big NO, I would say.
Let’s first give talent its due credit. Most of the award ceremonies that we see today are a farce. A group trying to impress the most happening person in the industry. Let’s first get away from that.

Secondly, let’s first have a great story, a good screenplay, a great cast, crew and a vision!
I guess we have got the first and third. What we need is the second and the last in the list.

Are we ready to keep working on the script and the screenplay till we know that we have achieved that perfection?

The best movies were not done in months or even few years.
They were fruits of labor that were conceived by passionate men who were ready for anything to better their chances of creating that episodes in time.

To begin with, do we have that patience?
