A career spanning some great work on music scores, collaboration with the legendary Gulzar. As a director some amazing work realized in the form of Makdee, Iqbal, The blue umbrella, a short film on AIDS (Upto 30 minutes offered to every director to showcase their talents), Omkara and now Kaminey!
I really wonder what drove Vishal Bharadwaj to make this film!
Really…
The Plot
To begin with the plot is very basic. There are two brothers, they are twins, one is Charlie and the other is Guddu. Both are worlds apart from each other. Charlie is in the wrong side of law and Guddu does social work by working for an NGO. Both want to make money. Charlie in the shortest possible time (He wants to be bookie and will do anything to make it happen) and Guddu atleast by year 2014. Both haven’t seen each other for years. Something happened and they just fell apart. Charlie has a friend, a confidante called Mikhail and they do small time crimes. The love of Guddu’s life is Sweety. Sweety is desperate to marry Guddu. She’s pregnant with his child and wants to hide it from her brother Bhope, the gangster. During one of the incidents a Guitar case loaded with drugs lands in the hands of Charlie. It actually belongs to Tashi, a gangster from Goa. The plot thickens when Charlie finds out that it is worth ten crores! Now everyone is after that box. Tashi is desperate to get it back from Charlie, Charlie wants to sell it back to Tashi with a price of ten lakhs offered back to him, Guddu wants to give that box to Bhope so he can claim sweety back to him… But there is an icing on this piece of cake… Charlie says F instead of S and Guddu stammers…
With the opening titles, Vishal credits the idea to Cajetan Jon…
I really wonder what drove Vishal Bharadwaj to make this film!
The whole premise would have been as an idea (according to me) the way both the twins talk in the film and then I guess it was Vishal’s idea to put the pieces together!
If you carefully watch the film it could easily be considered as a rip off from a typical Bollywood masala flick!
- There are two brothers
- They are twins
- One is on the good side of law and the other is on the wrong side
- They have never met since a very long time
- There is drama, action, emotion, songs, gangster etc etc
Highlights of the film
What I really enjoyed in this movie are the dialogues. Vishal is too good at it. I wonder if he takes advices from Gulzar. I almost feel that like lyrics, the dialogues too are written by Gulzar! The play of words, pun intended lines they all just blend way too well with the scenes and the situations!
Shahid’s awesome performance and his looks.
Dhan te nan song… (already made enough waves)
Priyanka chopra’s short and sweet role (although miniscule, she makes quite an impact on the audience doing full justice to the marathi mulgi that she played on screen)
Amol gupte (The guy who wrote Taare zameen par, make quite an impressive debut as Bhope)
Besides Shahid and Priyanka, all other characters are no big names in the industry as actors. Their selection seemed pretty right so as to fit in the roles to a T! That was quite a task and full credit to the director to bring out the best in them.
I cannot imagine this movie done by any other director… with a weak plot like this, tried and much tested formula the director has done a pretty decent job. That really shows the directors knack at pulling off this kind of a film!
The first half drags on a bit and tends to slow down at many places. Second half is pretty gripping and taut where all the loose ends get tied together.
I wish the end was something different. I expected that from Vishal Bharadwaj. His movies are so good and amazing that with each release you go with a certain high. I did not feel that high while watching this film.
Overall, I did not find Kaminey a “F”ati”f”fying cinematic experience
I still remain, a true Vishal Bharadwaj fan!
